Things to Do in Maui
Recreation and Activities
Golf. Wailea has long been known as a golfer’s paradise. The Wailea Golf Club is one of Hawaii’s largest and finest resort golf facilities, with three outstanding championship layouts (the Wailea Blue, Wailea Gold and Wailea Emerald courses), two clubhouses, the finest outdoor training facility in the Pacific, and more than a dozen prestigious national and international awards. Both Wailea Gold (home to the Champions Skins Game) and Wailea Emerald, were designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and are considered among the premier courses in Hawaii and the United States. Only five minutes south of Wailea sit two more Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed masterpieces: the North and South Courses of the Makena Golf Club, home to the Hawaii State Open. Both courses have spectacular views.
Tennis. If tennis is your game, the Wailea Tennis Club, located just up the street from Wailea Ekahi should fit the bill. The club (rated one of the country’s 50 best resort tennis facilities) has dozens of courts available any time and lessons with the resident tennis professionals are available. In addition, the club boasts a 1,000-seat tennis stadium that is the site of one of Hawaii‘s largest local tournaments, the Wailea Open.
The Makena Tennis Club is located adjacent to the Makena Golf Course and Tennis Resorts Online ranks it in the top 75 for tennis resorts in the world. The Club features world-class services and excellent facilities in a peaceful island setting with a gorgeous ocean view.
There are also public lighted courts at Waipuilani Park. They sit behind the Maui Sunset Condos, north of Azeka Shopping Center in central Kihei.
The Beaches and the Ocean. Ekahi’s own exceptional Keawakapu Beach is only one of the many beaches in Maui. Here’s a an extensive list of Maui beaches (Maui has 42 miles’ worth of them!). Where the beaches end, the warm water begins, bringing with it a dizzying array of activities, including snorkeling, surfing, boogie boarding, swimming, windsurfing, scuba diving, kayaking, sailing and whale watching. The snorkeling at the Wailea beaches (around Keawakapu and Ulua Beach, in particular) is top notch. In addition to the incredible array of brightly colored fish, you may chance upon sea turtles that swim near the shore. Another notable snorkeling option is the waters just off Molokini, a tiny crescent moon-shaped islet that is actually the exposed lip of a submerged volcano. Located approximately 6 miles off the coast of Maui (and clearly viewable from our condo), Molokini is a protected marine sanctuary that offers snorkeling both outside and inside the crater.
The Maui Ocean Center, located at 192 Ma’alaea Rd. Ma’alaea, is the expression of a quarter century long passion of diving and studying the tropical ocean environment and its species. Provides an up close view of Hawaiian Marine Life without getting wet!
Hiking & Nature. Maui possesses virtually every climatic zone imaginable (from the sea level coral reefs ringing the island to the lunar landscape found inside the long-dormant volcanic crater of Mount Haleakala, 10,000 feet above the sea), with roads and/or hiking trails that enable you to access it.
If you are getting up very early due to the time change, you might want to catch the strikingly beautiful sunrise at Haleakala Crater as it comes up out of the ocean over the clouds. It is extremely cold until the sun comes up and is about a two-hour drive away. In the alternative, you could get up when you feel like it, have a wonderful breakfast at the Kula Lodge on the way there and take a two to three hour hike through the crater which has been likened to the surface of the moon. It is a terrain unlike any you have ever been to, but the footing is difficult on rock and sand and the hike could be demanding.
